DEATHS OF SARAH AND ANN MARIA BALLINGER

FATAL ACCIDENT - About two o clock in the afternoon of Friday

a poor woman named Ballinger, residing at Upton St Leonards, near this city,

being employed in making bread for her family, had just stepped out to get

some clay for the purpose of stopping up the oven, but her infant daughter

about three years old, began trampling on the burning embers which the

mother had the moment before thrown under the grate . The consequence

was that the childs clothes took fire, and the same calamity extended itself to

an elder sister, eleven years of age, who had instantly run to her assistance .

Both children completely enveloped in flames, then rushed out into the road,

where the distracted mother in her efforts to relieve them was herself

dreadfully burnt . Surgical assistance was promptly procured but, melancholy

to relate, the two juvenile sufferers, after enduring great torment, died, the

one at two, the other at seven o clock the following morning . Mrs Ballinger

was in a dangerous state for some time, but we have since heard, that she is

materially better . An inquest was held upon the bodies of the two children,

on Monday, before J Cooke Esq. Coroner, where a verdict was returned of

Accidental death .

UPTON ST LEONARDS LABOURER SUCCUMBS TO TETANUS

THE CORONERS ENQUIRY

The City Coroner , ( Mr Charles Scott ) conducted an enquiry at the Gloucestershire Royal

Infirmary on Tuesday evening into the circumstances attending the death of Frank Ballinger , a

general labourer , aged 53 , who lived at Upton Hill , Upton St Leonards and who was admitted to

the above institution on Saturday morning last , dying on Sunday from tetanus .

Martha Ballinger , wife of the deceased , said that his general health was very good . He had

been working lately for Mrs Ancrum of St Leonards Court and Mr Tidmarsh of Upton Hill . The

week before last the deceased worked for Mrs Ancrum throughout the week and appeared very

well . She did not know what he was working at , but he did not complain at all of being hurt .

During last week he worked for the first two days for Mr Tidmarsh , putting in posts , and the next

two days for Mrs Ancrum , but she did not know what work he was doing for her . He made no

complaint on either of those days . Witness did not notice any cuts or scratches about his hands .

When he went to bed on Thursday evening he seemed to her to be as usual and on Friday morning

he got up and lit the fire at 8.30 She came down a little later and asked him if he had had his

breakfast , and he replied that he had not , as he had a stiffness in his face . Witness induced him

to take a cup of tea and a bun , and after that he complained of a pain in his left side like cramp .

She gave him some warm pepper water but he did not feel any better . She then sent to the Kings

Head Hotel for some brandy , which deceased took with warm water during the morning . About

2.30 in the afternoon he went upstairs and got into bed , where between six and seven o clock she

brought him some warm milk , a large portion of which he drank . witness went to bed about 11

pm when deceased was quiet , but at 11.30 he began to cry out and moan , and when asked what

was the matter , said he had a pain in his side . She made a large linseed meal poultice and put it

on his side , and also one on his throat , which eased him very much . He went to sleep until

about 3.30. when he again woke up in pain . She sent for Dr Scott from Painswick at 5 o clock on

Saturday morning , and he arrived an hour later , and ordered deceased to be removed to the Royal

Infirmary which was done .

Harry Ballinger , of Upton St Leonards , a dairyman said the deceased was his brother and that

on Thursday , the 4th inst . , he was working for Mrs Ancrum doing hedging . About 1.10 pm . he

came to witness's house as usual for his pint of cider and asked his wife for a needle and thread to

mend his glove. While he was drinking the cider witness mended it for him . The thumb was

nearly worn away and there were holes in two or three of the fingers . Deceased had a newly

made scratch on his left hand , and said that the reason he wanted the glove mended was because

the thorns stuck into his hand , and it was very painful .

Mr Hugh James Hobbs , junior house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary said he remembered the

deceased being admitted on Saturday morning , when he was suffering from acute traumatic

tetanus . He got rather worse , the spasms occurring more frequently . The cause of death was

asphyxia due to spasm of the diaphragm or tetanus . Tetanus was never present without a wound

of some kind , although it might not be observable . witness noticed several scratches on

Deceased arm which appeared to be about a fortnight old . The time taken by the tetanus

bacillus to mature was anything from 5 to 21 days or even more .

The coroner having put the case to the jury , they returned a verdict that the deceased died from

tetanus brought on by the scratches on the arm , and also passed a vote of sympathy with the

widow , in which the coroner concurred .

In 1933, they moved again to Lower Clifton Farm, Severn Stoke. The farm was devastated by the floods of 1947 and Marguerite died soon afterwards. As a result, Albert sold the farm and retired to Stroud. He later remarried Constance Grace Hines in 1949.
